Tess's twin brother and one of Arroyo's most capable scouts — as instinctive in the field as he is resistant to following orders he disagrees with.

Kael operates at the edge. It is where he is most useful and most dangerous — to the enemy, to the colony's political complications, and to anyone trying to predict what he will do next. He is a medic and a gifted field reader who has a habit of making the right call at the wrong moment: breaking formation because the situation changed, acting before the order came, and being correct just often enough that the discipline question never gets fully resolved. He and Tess are twins in the truest sense — complementary, frequently in conflict, and each the person the other trusts most.
