Rapid glacial melt releases a prehistoric pathogen preserved for thirty millennia. As global powers weaponize and release the hyper-lethal strain, the Safeguard vaccine is quietly distributed only to the wealthy and compliant. The resulting Onset claims nearly a third of the human species in a single catastrophic wave.
Governing systems crumble and the rule of law fails. Resource Wars erupt across every contested border as militias deploy nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. A chain-reaction satellite destruction event seals humanity beneath a lethal orbital debris field. Billions more die in the resulting anarchy, famine, and collapse, reducing the global population to just under four billion.
The ultra-wealthy claim the most habitable regions and construct fifty-eight fortified mega-cities known as Sanctums — surveillance states governed by an omnipresent intelligent grid called AURA. Those who refuse submission settle the Colonies on the fringes, while the destitute and unwanted are cast into the lawless Wastes.
The iron grip of the Sovereigns solidifies. The elite inside the Sanctums live in pristine luxury and extreme longevity, defended by bio-engineered assets and absolute technological control. The Colonies survive on the scraps of the Sanctums. Fear of militant groups called Reapers is used to keep order, while harsh existence and continuous conflict claim countless lives in the Wastes.
