Humanity experiences unprecedented technological leaps alongside rising societal anxiety. Automation triggers mass job displacement, and data surveillance quietly permeates daily life, laying the unseen groundwork for total control.
Unprecedented global warming triggers rapid icemelt, releasing a prehistoric virus. Weaponized and accidentally leaked by global powers during the ensuing panic, the hyper-lethal strain decimates 30% of the unvaccinated global population.
Governing systems crumble and the rule of law fails. Devastating Resource Wars erupt, accelerating catastrophic environmental instability. Global infrastructure is decimated and the world food supply shatters. Billions die in the resulting anarchy, famine, and disease, bringing the population down to just under four billion.
The ultra-wealthy and powerful took over most inhabitable lands and build massive secure mega-cities known as Sanctums. Those not willing to submit entirely to these surveillance states form fringe Colonies, while the destitute are cast out to perish in the lawless Wastes.
The iron grip of the Sovereigns solidifies. The elite inside the Sanctums live in pristine luxury and extreme longevity, defended by bio-engineered assets and absolute technological control. The Colonies survive on the scraps of the Sanctums. Fear of militant groups called Reapers is used to keep order. Meanwhile, harsh existence and continuous conflict claim countless lives in the Wastes.
The global population has fallen under 3 billion. An uneasy, brutal equilibrium holds. But beneath the veneer of order, cracks are forming. The shadow economy thrives in the Wastes, and whispers of rebellion circulate among those ground under the heels of the Sanctums.
